SirKingsleyWilliamAmis,(16April1922-22October1995)wasanEnglish,poet,dteacher.Hewrotemorethan20novels,sixvolumesofpoetry,amemoir,variousshortstories,radioandtelevisionscripts,alongwithworksofsodliterarycriticisAgtohisbiographer,ZacharyLeader,Amiswas“thefiEnglishiovelistofthesedhalfofthetweury.”

HewasthefatherofEnglishinAmis.

In2008,TheTimesrankedKingsleyAmisniofthe50greatestBritishwriterssince1945.

Amis’sfirstnovel,LuckyJim(1954),isperhapshismostfamous,takingitsgermfromAmis’sobservationoftheattheUyofLeicester,wherehisfriendLarki.Theirizesthehigh-browacademicsetofaredbriiversity,seenthroughtheeyesonist,JimDixoomakehiswayasayouory.ThenovelerceivedbymanyaspartoftheAngryYoungMehe195aiifiofalBritishlife,thoughAmisneverehisiion.Amis’sotherhe1950sandearly1960ssimilarlydepictsituationsfromporaryBritishlife,oftendrawnfromAmis’sowhatUainFeeling(1955)ayoungprovinciallibrarian(agaihrefereoLarkin,librarianatHull)aiontowardsadultery;ILikeItHere(1958)presentsAmis’sptuousviewof“abroad”
